UTHealth Houston was represented at the 92nd annual Aerospace Medical Association’s Annual Scientific Meeting in Reno, Nevada, which took place May 22–27, 2022. The conference brings together more than 1,400 international experts across all aspects of the aerospace community to exchange ideas and shape the future of medicine in space.
Samuel Beger, MD, MPH (PGY-1), presented several research projects during the meeting. While working at SpaceX, he co-authored “Keeping COVID-19 Off the ISS: Lessons Learned from the Crew Demo-2 Mission”, published in the Journal of Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance. The study outlines how collaboration between SpaceX and NASA helped prevent the introduction of COVID-19 to the International Space Station.
Additionally, panels highlighted “Science in Isolation: How Commercial Space Companies Can Support Research During Pandemics”, a study co-authored by Dr. Beger and UT Houston PGY-III resident Nicolas Heft, MD. Published in Nature Communications, the paper explores how private spaceflight programs can contribute to the scientific community during global health crises.
