05/31/2023

UTHealth Houston’s Space Medicine Program, the subject of this ACEP article, is presented at the 93rd Aerospace Medical Association’s Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, May 21 – May 26.

Dr. Nicolas Heft’s research, entitled “Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Astronauts on Inspiration4” addressed the important question of how human spaceflight affects human glycemic response. He studied continuous glucose monitoring systems worn by astronauts where blood sugar levels were measured every 5 minutes during the entirety of their mission.

Dr. Samuel Beger presented his ongoing research which began when he was a medical student at the NASA Aerospace Medicine Clerkship about Space Motion Sickness (SMS), which is experienced by approximately 60-80% of space travelers during the first several days in microgravity. Through evaluating data from NASA flight surgeon logs from Space Shuttle and International Space Station Missions, Dr. Beger’s team is studying the efficacy of medications in both prophylactic and immediate treatment of SMS.
