Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Globally, the extension of autonomous health decision-making has not been fully realized for women. The WHO (World Health Organization) has highlighted the significant impact of biological sex on women’s health, compounded by societal disadvantages resulting from discriminatory actions, policies, and sociocultural norms. Women and girls face increased vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The Theory of Gender and Power framework describes the inequity in gender-based power within relationships. Social norms that limit access to education and employment further threaten women’s overall health. These threats are exacerbated by pervasive acts of violence against women, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

This special issue invites prospective studies that test behavioral interventions using adaptation frameworks, implementation science, randomized controlled trials, comparative effectiveness approaches, and other rigorous scientific methods to increase access to reproductive justice and sexual health. We aim to normalize sex positivity and empower women to gain autonomy over their sexual decisions.
