EM Assistant Professor and Director of Media Relations, Salil Bhandari, MD was recently interviewed by Telemundo Houston to provide insights on the rise in recent carbon monoxide poising caused by home generators. These extremely useful but potentially dangerous machines emit C02, which is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause irreversible and life-long health conditions like brain and heart problems.
In the interview, Llamadas por intoxicación con monóxido de carbono se triplican tras azote de Beryl (Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Calls Triple After Beryl Strike), Dr. Bhandari shared crucial information about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially post-Hurricane Beryl since many homes have been without power and families have turned to using generators.

Dr. Bhandari mentioned that during a natural disaster last year, 120 people were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at Memorial Hermann Hospital – TMC. He emphasized that if you experience any symptoms of poisoning, you should call 9-1-1 for immediate assistance.
Please remember to keep generators outside and at least 20ft away from your home when running. If you experience any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, again, please call 9-1-1 immediately for urgent help.
Thank you, Dr. Bhandari, for your dedication and for sharing your expertise in multiple languages to keep us all safe!
