We are pleased to announce that EM Faculty member, Mack Sheraton, MD was featured in the July-August 2024 issue of SAEM Pulse publication. Dr. Sheraton authored the article, “Entering a New Era of Risk: Understanding AI-Driven Probabilities,” which explores the opportunities and risks associated with AI in medicine.
The article highlights:
- AI and Risk in Medicine: The integration of AI introduces new uncertainties and risks in clinical practice. Emergency physicians (EPs) are familiar with assessing risk and use various decision-making tools to manage patient care.
- New Risks with AI: Terms like hallucination, model drift, and bias describe potential errors in AI systems. These can lead to inaccurate outputs and require careful evaluation.
- Strategies for AI Integration:
- Recognize and Categorize Risks – Identify and describe AI-introduced risks like hallucination and bias.
- Quantify Measurable Risks – Audit and test AI algorithms to understand the likelihood of harm.
- Define Standards and Policies – Develop guidelines and collaborate with experts to ensure safe AI implementation.
- Risk Mitigation: Employ a meticulous approach with quality assurance, independent validation, and phased implementation. Techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and continuous quality monitoring can address biases and model drift.
- Clinician Involvement: EPs must remain involved in AI integration, from design to deployment, to minimize risks and enhance patient care.
Dr. Sheraton emphasizes the importance of balancing AI’s benefits with its risks, advocating for responsible and informed integration into clinical workflows. For the full story, please click here (p.42)!
Great job, Dr. Sheraton, and keep up the great work in highlighting UTHealth Houston’s contributions to the field of emergency medicine!
