Congratulations to Daniel Ostermayer, MD and Amit Mehta, MD, CMQ on their recent publication in JAMIA Open!
This research highlights the critical role of external validation for predictive tools used in emergency medicine. By exploring how the Epic Sepsis Predictive Model functions across different patient populations, the team identified opportunities for improvement and underscored the importance of tailoring these tools to better support clinicians in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
Their study, External Validation of the Epic Sepsis Predictive Model in 2 County Emergency Departments, provides critical insights into the performance of Epic’s sepsis alert system in real-world clinical settings.
This research, conducted at two Harris County emergency departments, highlights the challenges and limitations of using predictive models to detect sepsis in time-sensitive environments. By evaluating over 145,000 patient encounters, the study emphasizes the need for hospital-level validation of electronic health record-based tools to ensure their efficacy in diverse populations.
We are incredibly proud of our faculty’s contributions to advancing emergency medicine and improving patient care. Special thanks to Drs. Ostermayer, Mehta, and their colleagues for their dedication to this impactful work!
