This week, our Space Medicine Fellows participated in a Diving Medical Technician (DMT) course in Dallas, TX, an intensive training designed to equip them with critical skills in pressure physiology and emergency interventions.

Led by instructors specializing in space and dive medicine, the course provided an in-depth understanding of the physiological risks associated with extra-vehicular activities (EVAs), including decompression sickness, arterial gas embolisms, and barotrauma.

Fellows were trained to quickly diagnose and manage these conditions, ensuring they can provide life-saving care in extreme environments.

The program included multiple hyperbaric chamber dives, where participants practiced essential skills under time constraints, as well as a comprehensive written exam.

We are proud to announce that all three UTHealth Houston participants—Drs. Nicolas Heft, Curtis “Trey” Lowery III, and Sam Beger—successfully passed the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) exam, earning their Diving Medical Technician certification.

We’re also excited to share that we have successfully launched the EMER 4009 Space Medicine elective, which will officially open next year!

Big things are ahead for Space Medicine in 2025, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for our fellows and the program!
