EM Interns recently received a high-impact introduction to the world of prehospital trauma care during our annual Intern EMS Day, hosted at the LKQ Pick Your Part Scrap Yard in southwest Houston.
With guidance and support from the Houston Fire Department (HFD), our interns stepped into the role of first responders—participating in realistic, hands-on training exercises that mirror the challenges of real emergency scenes.
From cutting through car doors and operating the jaws of life, to extracting simulated patients trapped beneath heavy equipment, the day provided an immersive look at field-based trauma response and scene management.
As part of the experience, our interns also rotated through simulated resuscitation scenarios aboard the Mobile Simulation Training Unit (MSTU), our mobile emergency department training unit. These scenarios were designed to help trainees hone critical skills in patient stabilization, communication, and teamwork under pressure.
We are extremely grateful to our colleagues at HFD for their partnership, equipment, and expertise, and to the faculty and residents from our department who made the day possible. Their dedication ensures our new interns are equipped not only with clinical knowledge but also the real-world readiness to deliver lifesaving care when it matters most.
Intern EMS Day reflects our ongoing commitment to innovative, practical training and our belief in preparing future emergency physicians to lead with confidence in every setting.
