We are pleased to highlight the recent publication by EM’s Mary-Kate Gorlick, MD titled “Scoping Review of Adult Emergency Department Discharge Interventions” in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine (July 2025 issue).
The study systematically reviewed 100 adult-focused ED discharge interventions, published between 2003 and early 2023, using PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
It categorized interventions into 7 distinct themes, with the most impactful being improvements focused on patient comprehension of instructions.
The review emphasizes the need for more evidence-based, scalable strategies to optimize discharge processes and reduce adverse outcomes, such as return ED visits
Poor comprehension and inadequate discharge planning have been strongly linked to higher rates of readmission and poor adherence to post-ED care plans.
Dr. Gorlick’s work synthesizes current evidence to identify best practices and gaps, providing practical insights for enhancing patient-centered care during transitions from the ED.
This work reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to advancing research in emergency medicine and improving the systems that support patient care.
Congratulations to Dr. Gorlick on a timely and meaningful contribution!
