Earlier this month, Shabana Walia, MD, MPH and Katy Larimore, MD represented UTHealth Houston at the XIIIth Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress (MEMC25) in Budapest, Hungary. The MEMC conference series is a highly regarded international meeting that brings together emergency medicine professionals from around the world to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging research, and share innovations in clinical practice and education.
Dr. Walia presented a poster on August 16, 2025, titled “Peer Outreach Following an Opioid Overdose” through the UT HEROES Program, with co-authors A.S. Cohen and T. Champangne-Langabeer. The project highlighted the importance of peer-led support as a critical intervention in addressing the opioid crisis.
In addition, Drs. Walia & Larimore delivered an educational presentation on “Navigating Difficult Conversations with Residents” on August 17, 2025. The session addressed strategies for fostering open communication and building supportive learning environments, an essential aspect of medical education and mentorship.
Participation in MEMC25 allowed our faculty not only to share the impactful work being done at UTHealth Houston but also to bring back new ideas and global perspectives to strengthen our own educational and clinical programs.
Congratulations to Drs. Walia and Larimore on representing our department with excellence on the international stage!
