Dr. Lehnhardt served as an author on “Development of Progressively Earth-Independent Medical Operations to Enable NASA Exploration Missions”. This article explores how space missions will increasingly require astronauts to provide complex medical care with less reliance on Earth-based support.

The study highlights the need for self-sufficient medical systems that allow astronauts to diagnose, treat, and manage emergencies independently. It also emphasizes the development of training protocols for crew medical officers in simulated deep-space autonomy scenarios, as well as the identification of critical operational gaps on long-duration missions, underscoring the importance of integrated decision-making tools and telemedicine alternatives.

Dr. Menon co-authored “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Techniques on the Dragon Spacecraft: A Polaris Dawn Mission Study”. This research examined the challenges of performing CPR in microgravity aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.

The study found that microgravity alters traditional CPR mechanics, requiring modified compression techniques and adaptive positioning. It also outlined safety protocols and equipment considerations to optimize emergency care in confined spacecraft environments, and demonstrated practical simulations of crew readiness and response strategies that could prove critical for both commercial and exploration spaceflights.
