Each year, October 6–12 marks National Physician Assistant (PA) Week – a time to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions PAs make to health care.
The week traces its roots back to 1967, when the first class of physician assistants graduated from Duke University, marking the birth of a profession built on innovation, teamwork, and patient-centered care.
Today, PA Week celebrates not only how far the profession has come, but also the dedication, compassion, and expertise PAs bring to the frontlines of medicine every single day.

At the Department of Emergency Medicine, we are fortunate to work alongside an outstanding team of PAs who provide exceptional patient care, support our residents and fellows, and contribute to the teaching mission of UTHealth Houston – McGovern Medical School.
They are essential to delivering high-quality emergency care in fast-paced, high-acuity environments like Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ).
Of course, it’s not all serious…we love to celebrate too! Here are a few snapshots of the fun our team had during PA Week.
PAs are one of the fastest-growing healthcare professions, collectively engaging in more than 590 million patient interactions each year across all specialties and settings. With nearly 190,000 PAs nationwide, the profession continues to expand access to care and transform healthcare through patient-centered, team-based medical practice.
This week, and every week, we are grateful for the commitment of our PAs to advancing patient care, supporting their colleagues, and embodying the core values of emergency medicine.
Please join us in celebrating their contributions and recognizing the important role they play in shaping the future of health care!
