Dr. Sam Luber officially steps into his new role as Chair of Emergency Medicine, continuing his legacy of innovation, education, and compassionate care.
It is with great enthusiasm that we announce Samuel D. Luber, MD, MPH as the new Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGovern Medical School, effective October 16, 2025.
This appointment marks an exciting new chapter for our department as we continue advancing excellence in emergency medicine education, research, and patient care!

Dr. Luber has served as interim chair since July 2024, and also holds roles as professor, assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education, and executive vice chair for Academic Affairs. He brings to this leadership position a strong record in clinical care, education, and research.
Over his career, Dr. Luber has been recognized with multiple honors, including the 2015 Physician of the Year Award – Emergency Center from Memorial Hermann Hospital, inclusion in Houstonia Magazine’s Top Doctor list, and repeated Super Doctor designations in Texas.
In his statement, Dr. Luber expressed humility and vision:
