Advancing Med Ed in EM with Next-Gen Tech & National Impact

Hilary Fairbrother, MD, MPH, an EM Professor at UTHealth Houston & Assistant Dean of Pre-Clerkship Education at McGovern, continues to be a leading voice in advancing medical education and the practice of emergency medicine.

Most recently, she helped lead the “AI in Medical Education” retreat alongside McGovern’s Associate Dean for Faculty & Ed Development, Allison Ownby, PhD, MEd and Assistant Dean for Educator Development, Peggy Hsieh, PhD, MEd, in collaboration with medical students Samyuktha Senthil Kumar & Cassidy Edwards.

This hands-on workshop brought together faculty and staff to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence in teaching, including course design, educational video development, creation of clinical case vignettes, and generation of board-style multiple-choice questions.

The session highlighted the growing importance of tech literacy for future physicians. Participants also gained practical tools they can apply to curriculum development. It also emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty and students. Together, they explored ways to integrate emerging technology into medical education.

Recognized for Teaching Excellence and National Impact

In addition to her educational leadership, Dr. Fairbrother was recently honored by McGovern medical students and the Texas Medical Association (external link) with the C. Frank Webber, MD Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognizing her sustained commitment to mentorship and learner development.

She also received national recognition in Washington, DC as the ACEP 911 (external link) Network Member of the Year, acknowledging her advocacy efforts and her impact on advancing EM at a national level.

Dr. Fairbrother continues to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of emergency medicine and to thoughtful improvements in medical education at our institution and beyond. It’s been an impressive month, and we’re proud to have her on our team!
