How to Be a Hero: Lifesaving Skills Every Kid Should Know

Community Outreach Through Medical Education

Our team had the privilege of visiting Alief ISD’s Hicks Elementary (external link), where students jumped into hands-on CPR training and the world of Emergency Medicine with enthusiasm!

From the moment we arrived, students were engaged, curious, and ready to learn what it means to step in during an emergency. We walked through what emergency medicine doctors and PAs do, how STEM connects to healthcare, and how everyday knowledge can help save a life.

Students learned how to recognize an emergency, when and how to call 911, and how to check for breathing using simple, practical steps. We demonstrated the hands-only CPR technique, emphasizing “push hard and fast” at about 100 beats per minute using the familiar “Baby Shark” rhythm as a guide.

The highlight was watching each student take turns practicing CPR on mannequins, building confidence as they learned how to respond in real-life situations. Many also explored basic choking response techniques and asked thoughtful questions throughout the session. It was a powerful reminder that even young students can learn skills that make a real difference.

Huge thank you to Hicks Elementary for welcoming us, and to everyone who helped lead and support the session!

Be on the lookout for future training events as we continue bringing lifesaving education into the community.
