Expert Advice for a Safer Summer

As Texans head to beaches, lakes, and ponds this summer, Carrie Bakunas, MD, emergency medicine physician at UTHealth Houston and Medical Director of Emergency Services at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, joined KPRC 2 (external link) to discuss an important seasonal health concern: preventing serious bacterial infections associated with natural bodies of water.

During the interview, Dr. Bakunas explained that while infections such as necrotizing fasciitis are rare, they can progress rapidly and require immediate medical attention. She emphasized the importance of avoiding swimming with open wounds – including cuts, scrapes, fresh tattoos, or razor burns, as these can provide a pathway for bacteria to enter the body.

Dr. Bakunas also reminded viewers that potentially harmful bacteria may be present in both saltwater and freshwater environments, making simple preventive measures especially important throughout the summer. Washing thoroughly after swimming, monitoring wounds for signs of infection, and seeking prompt medical care for worsening pain, redness, swelling, or fever can help reduce the risk of serious illness.

Community education is an important part of our department’s mission, and opportunities like this allow our faculty to share trusted, evidence-based guidance that helps keep Houstonians safe both inside and outside the hospital.
