Intern EMS Day Brings Prehospital Medicine to Life
Emergency medicine extends far beyond the walls of the ED, and during this year’s annual EMS Intern Day, our incoming residents had the opportunity to experience exactly that.
Hosted in partnership with the Houston Fire Department (HFD), the day immersed interns in the dynamic world of prehospital emergency care through realistic, hands-on training designed to mirror the challenges first responders face every day.
Working alongside EMS professionals, participants rotated through field exercises that emphasized rapid assessment, communication, teamwork, and clinical decision-making in environments where every second matters.
The day’s training took place at a local vehicle salvage yard, where interns navigated simulated emergency scenarios involving extrication and trauma response.
The unique setting reinforced the importance of adapting medical care to unpredictable conditions while collaborating closely with fire and EMS personnel during complex rescue operations.
Throughout the day, residents also gained a deeper appreciation for the critical role EMS plays as the first link in the continuum of emergency care.
From scene management and patient stabilization to seamless transitions into the emergency department, each exercise highlighted the collaboration that makes high-quality emergency medicine possible.
Experiences like these help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice, giving our interns a valuable insight into the environments, challenges, and most importantly teamwork that define emergency medicine long before a patient reaches the hospital.
