Preparing for Increased Mosquito Activity After Heavy Rain

As rainy weather approaches Houston, increased standing water may lead to greater mosquito activity and a higher risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Our faculty have been making a few appearances in the local news lately, and this time, EM’s Carrie Bakunas, MD was featured on KHOU 11 (external link).

Dr. Bakunas, Medical Director of Emergency Services at Memorial Hermann-TMC and Assistant Professor at UTHealth Houston, discussed mosquito safety and West Nile virus prevention following the detection of a West Nile-positive mosquito pool in Sugar Land.

During the segment, Dr. Bakunas highlighted the “4 Ds” of mosquito prevention:

  • Defend: Use insect repellent with DEET
  • Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors
  • Dusk/Dawn: Take extra precautions when mosquitoes are most active
  • Drain: Remove standing water from containers like flower pots and pet dishes

The discussion is especially timely as storms and heavy rainfall move through the Houston area this week.

Rain can leave behind standing water in yards, gutters, flowerpots, containers, and other areas, creating additional opportunities for mosquitoes to breed in the days that follow.

As conditions become wetter across the region, Houstonians are encouraged to check around their homes for standing water and take appropriate precautions to reduce their risk of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

Great job to Dr. Bakunas for continuing to share important health and safety information with our Houston community!
