Our Space Medicine program continues to expand its role in advancing research and innovation, with a new partnership between UTHealth Houston + Exobiosphere (external link) opening the door to exciting opportunities in space-based biomedical research.

The collaboration will explore how space-based research can accelerate scientific discoveries, advance therapeutic development, and improve human health on Earth.

Through Exobiosphere’s Orbital High-Throughput Screening platform, researchers will be able to study biological processes in microgravity alongside similar experiments conducted on Earth.
These findings could offer new insights into drug discovery, precision medicine, and therapeutic development.
The initiative also lays the foundation for a proposed Space Medicine Lab at TMC3 (external link), further strengthening Houston’s position as a leader in space medicine and biomedical innovation.

Located within the Texas Medical Center (external link)‘s growing innovation district, TMC3 brings together researchers, health care institutions, and industry partners to foster collaboration and accelerate scientific discovery.
The proposed lab would provide a dedicated space to support space-based biomedical experiments, analyze research findings, and help translate discoveries made in orbit into improved health outcomes here on Earth.
At the forefront of this effort is Ben Bobrow, MD, FACEP former Chair of our department and current Executive Director of UTH’s Space Medicine Program. His continued leadership reflects our department’s commitment to expanding opportunities in space medicine, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The partnership also opens the door to new research collaborations and potential funding opportunities, including efforts involving the Texas Space Commission.
It represents another exciting milestone for our growing Space Medicine program, building upon the work of our faculty and strengthening connections between emergency medicine, human spaceflight, and biomedical research.
