Training for the Pressures of Spaceflight

When it comes to human spaceflight, understanding pressure can be the difference between mission success and a medical emergency.

Dr. Jevons Wang at SpaceX

Jevons Wang, MD, current Space Medicine Fellow recently attended the Emergency Decompression Accident Management course at SpaceX (external link) headquarters in Hawthorne, California, and the Catalina Island Hyperbaric Chamber (external link) facility.

The course brought together experts from commercial spaceflight, NASA (external link), and dive and hyperbaric medicine to explore the recognition and management of decompression illness, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by rapid pressure changes.

Preparing Clinicians for the Next Frontier

Through hands-on training and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Wang examined the unique physiological challenges of human spaceflight and the specialized approaches needed to respond effectively.
