Why McGovern? McGovern Med EM was my number one choice for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, our training is conducted in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, which allows us to be educated and mentored by highly ranked faculty who rank among the very best in their field. In addition to training at the busiest level one trauma center in the nation, I love that Houston offers diverse neighborhoods, a large variety of arts and entertainment, and an endless amount of nature trails for running and/or walking my dog. Additionally, the airports offer quick, easy, and affordable access to Mexico and Central America. Training at McGovern Med EM is a truly unique experience in the sense that what you do here will not only impact local and international patients and their families but also how emergency medicine is practiced around the world.

Interests Within EM: Wilderness / Austere Medicine, Global Health, and Ultrasound.

Why McGovern? The Memorial Hermann & LBJ combo punch. Herman has all the bells & whistles (level 1 trauma, neurosurgery, cath lab, etc) in a major US city. You learn to be comfortable with the highest level of acuity, including LVAD, transplant & oncology patients. Also, LifeFlight is in house and I’m ALL about the trauma. LBJ keeps you grounded about a patient population with profound needs both medical and beyond, a county hospital population where you’ll pretty much learn Spanish by immersion/out of necessity. LBJ also teaches you about escalation of care when your setting has limitations.

Interests Within EM: Ultrasound! It allows for making more informed medical decisions, deciding if a trauma patient needs to go to the OR vs CT or deciding if the postpartum patient who comes in with shortness of breath is in acute heart failure.

Why McGovern? Coming from Grady Hospital in ATL, I wanted to be at a hospital that was comparable in volume and acuity. I get all that and more here at McGovern Med EM. Between LBJ & MHH, you get the full spectrum of patients and many at their sickest. It is also a diverse program that reflects the demographic of patients that we see. This program is such an amazing place to train with great ancillary staff that make coming to work an honor and pleasure. Wouldn’t change a thing if I could do it all over again.
