EM 3 Rotations

Mastering Emergency Medicine: Your Final Year

Refining leadership skills and preparing for independent practice.

In the EM-3 year, residents step into leadership roles, overseeing junior residents and medical students while managing critically ill patients.

With 5.5 months at Memorial Hermann-TMC and 2.5 months at LBJ General Hospital, residents gain experience in high-acuity settings, including the NeuroTrauma ICU. Elective rotations such as EMS/Life Flight, Toxicology, Advanced Emergency Ultrasound, and more allow residents to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.

This year emphasizes autonomy, prompt and precise decision-making, and the transition to independent practice.

Elective
NeuroTrauma ICU (NTICU) (1 month) In the NTICU, the resident manages critically ill neurosurgical patients 1:1 with critical care faculty.
Elective Month (1 month) We have an extensive “menu” of options to choose from, but also routinely create new experiences that are tailored to the individual goals of the resident.
Community ED month at Memorial Hermann – Memorial City (1 month) The senior resident works in a community ED setting in West Houston with board certified Emergency Medicine faculty. The resident gains additional experience with efficiency and patient care in a setting different from the primary residency training site.
Community ED month at Memorial Hermann – Southwest (1 month) A one month community rotation spent at a high acuity location with a plethora of procedures and an advancement in autonomy.
MHH ED 5.5 months
LBJ ED 2.5 months

Five and a half ED months are spent at Memorial Hermann-TMC involving principles of ED management as a whole, progressive responsibility in supervising medical students and junior residents, and a focus on advanced principles of patient and departmental management. Two and a half months are spent at LBJ General Hospital.
