Houston as a Global Health Environment
Houston’s diversity provides a unique training ground for global emergency medicine. Learners care for patients representing a wide range of languages, cultures, and healthcare experiences, reinforcing the importance of adaptability, communication, and culturally informed care.
This local-global intersection allows trainees to develop skills directly applicable to emergency medicine practice both domestically and internationally.
Faculty and trainees within the Global Health Section engage in scholarly activity focused on emergency medicine education, ultrasound, systems development, and healthcare delivery in diverse and resource-variable settings. These efforts emphasize sustainable collaboration, knowledge sharing, and practical approaches to improving emergency care access and outcomes across global communities.
In addition to ongoing research and scholarship, the department supports international observerships and visiting scholar opportunities through collaboration with the UTHealth Houston Office of Global Health Initiatives. These experiences promote academic exchange and interdisciplinary learning for physicians and healthcare professionals from around the world.
