Dean Barbara J. Stoll has announced that Samuel D. Luber, M.D., MPH, associate professor of emergency medicine, and Samuel J. Prater, M.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine, will serve as interim co-chairs of the Department of Emergency Medicine, effective March 16, 2018.

“The Department of Emergency Medicine is in great hands with Drs. Luber and Prater.  Together, they bring incredible experience across the broad areas of clinical care, research, and training,” Dean Stoll said.

Luber and Prater take on the leadership role from Dr. Jamie McCarthy, who was appointed Memorial Hermann’s executive vice president and chief physician executive, effective March 19.

Luber joined the faculty of the McGovern Medical School in 2009, serving as the Residency Program director for Emergency Medicine from 2009-2017 and as the department’s vice chair for Education and Academic Affairs since 2017.  He is also an assistant dean of Graduate Medical Education. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University and completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati.

Prater joined the medical school faculty in 2012.  In addition to his role in the department, he is the medical director of Emergency Services for Memorial Hermann-TMC. A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Prater completed his internship and residency at McGovern Medical School and a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital.

A search committee will soon be appointed to conduct a national search for a permanent chair.

“Please join us in welcoming Drs. Luber and Prater to their new leadership roles,” Dean Stoll said.
