The 3rd Edition of the Brain Trauma Foundation’s Prehospital Guidelines for the Management of Traumatic Brain Injury has been published by a team of 22 medical experts led by Dr. Ben Bobrow, MD, FACEP, a professor and chair in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UTHealth Houston. The guidelines aim to provide evidence-based recommendations for healthcare providers in the prehospital setting, where early care for those with TBI has a significant impact on patient outcomes.
TBI is a major public health problem, with over 64,000 TBI-related deaths in the US in 2020 and more than 5 million people living with TBI-related disabilities. These revised guidelines focus on preventing secondary brain injuries, optimizing, cerebral blood flow, and avoiding treatment-induced brain insults. The authors believe that implementing these guidelines can triple the likelihood of a positive outcome for severe TBI patients.
