McGovern Medical School Emergency Medicine residency is one of over 20 residencies at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (MH-TMC), a Level I Trauma Center and urban teaching hospital located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC). TMC is the largest medical center in the world and includes 49 member institutions, including 2 medical schools, 4 schools of nursing, 13 hospitals, and 2 specialty institutions.

Memorial Hermann Hospital – TMC
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center TMC) was the first institution built in the Texas Medical Center in 1925. It is one of only two level I trauma centers serving the 7,000,000+ population of the greater Houston area (and the only one with a helipad). Memorial Hermann-TMC has an annual ED census of approximately 100,000 patients per year and is a private, not-for-profit, tertiary care center. The hospital is the principal teaching site for McGovern Medical School. With 40,000 trauma visits and over 10,000 of those patients admitted, MH-TMC has been described as the busiest trauma center in the United States. This trauma volume and acuity allow our residents to become experts in treating both critical and ambulatory trauma patients.
Total bed capacity at MH-TMC is 1,104 beds. Our emergency department at MH-TMC has 65 beds and may expand as patient volume demands. We have 8 trauma resuscitation bays, 6 medical resuscitation bays, 36 minor trauma/general medical care beds, and 15 pediatric area beds.
The ED is equipped with PACS for Radiology. Medical records are electronic and available on-line. Also on-line are multiple resources for reference and education. Charting is via an electronic medical record, and we utilize computerized physician order entry. Two dedicated ED CTs scanners are located within the ED. Radiology suites are adjacent to the ED. Interventional Radiology, MRI, and cardiac catheterization labs are also located in close proximity to the ED.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC), provides comprehensive multispecialty care for pediatric patients and serves as Houston’s largest Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. Founded in 1986, it is part of the Memorial Hermann Health System and affiliated with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, offering a robust academic environment for medical education and research. The hospital features a 118-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), one of the largest Level IV NICUs in the region, providing advanced care for critically ill newborns.
As a leading pediatric facility, it offers specialized services in cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and maternal-fetal medicine, including a nationally recognized fetal surgery program. The hospital’s Life Flight® air ambulance service, one of the busiest in the nation, supports rapid transport for critically ill pediatric patients. Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ)

Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Hospital is a 215-bed acute care facility and one of the primary teaching sites for UTHealth Houston’s Department of Emergency Medicine. As the first Level III trauma center designated in Texas, LBJ remains the state’s busiest Level III trauma center, handling over 88,000 emergency patient visits annually. The hospital provides comprehensive medical services, including specialized medical and surgical care, as well as rehabilitation services.
LBJ also serves as a regional center for neonatal intensive care, offering advanced care for high-risk deliveries and very low birth weight infants. Staffed by UTHealth Houston physician faculty and residents, LBJ Hospital offers a dynamic clinical environment that emphasizes hands-on learning and high-acuity patient care. This diverse patient population and volume allow emergency medicine residents to gain extensive experience managing a wide range of critical and complex cases, reinforcing their skills in both trauma and general emergency medicine.
Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH)

Texas Children’s Hospital-TMC
Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC), is the largest pediatric emergency center in South Central Texas and serves as a key rotation site for our EM-2 residents. Established in 1954, it has grown to become the largest children’s hospital in the United States, with 973 beds. The emergency center utilizes 48 emergency beds and 19 observation beds, managing over 85,000 patient visits annually. As a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons, it provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care across a wide range of pediatric specialties and subspecialties.
Texas Children’s is affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, offering robust academic and research opportunities alongside clinical training. The hospital’s network extends beyond its main campus to include satellite facilities in The Woodlands, West Campus, and Austin, as well as international collaborations through the Texas Children’s Global Health Network. Consistently ranked among the top pediatric hospitals in the nation, it was named to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, reaffirming its leadership in pediatric healthcare.

As one of the clinical rotation sites for UTHealth Houston EM residents, Memorial City provides valuable exposure to a high-volume, fast-paced emergency department with over 50,000 patient visits annually. The hospital serves as a regional referral center, offering comprehensive services, including advanced cardiovascular care, neurology, orthopedics, and oncology.
Its 33-story Memorial Hermann Tower is a notable landmark, symbolizing the hospital’s growth and commitment to providing exceptional healthcare. The emergency department is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities, allowing residents to manage a broad spectrum of cases, from routine emergencies to complex critical care scenarios. Memorial Hermann – The Woodlands Medical Center has been a cornerstone of trusted, patient-centered care in Montgomery County and north Harris County for nearly 40 years. As a designated Level II trauma center, the hospital provides comprehensive emergency and specialty care, making it an invaluable rotation site for UTHealth Houston EM residents. The facility boasts a 457-bed capacity across three patient towers and is supported by over 3,300 employees and more than 1,400 affiliated physicians representing nearly 90 medical specialties.
This location is also the first hospital in Montgomery County to achieve Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence, reflecting its commitment to high-quality, patient-focused care. The emergency department handles a diverse patient population, allowing residents to gain experience in both high-acuity trauma and complex medical cases.
