Application Requirements

The program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent U.S. immigrants and international applicants as follows:

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
  • H1B visas are not sponsored by this institution for Graduate Medical Education.

Applicants who graduated prior to the current year and who are not ECFMG certified at the time their application is submitted will not be considered for an interview. Applicants currently enrolled in medical school must be certified immediately after graduation. The program does not accept delayed start dates for residency training. Multiple attempts at passing USMLE will reduce the applicants’ chance of being offered an interview. Prior clinical experience is not required. Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must apply for an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa or have an INS issued employment authorization. H1B visas are not sponsored by this institution for Graduate Medical Education. More detailed information on the visa requirements and application procedures may be obtained from the Office of International Affairs at 713-500-3176.

Applicants are selected on the basis of their ability, academic credentials, communication skills, motivation, and integrity. We do not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or veteran status.

We accept twelve candidates annually with a start date of June 24. All interviews are held virtually through ResidencyCAS.  Applicants will be notified via ResidencyCAS if they are selected for an interview.

International Medical School Graduates

The Texas Medical Board and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services require that certain documents be reviewed and be present in your file should you be accepted into a residency/fellowship position. International Medical School Graduates (IMG’s) who are candidates for UTHealth residency and fellowship positions must present the one set of 8-½ inch by 11-inch certified and notarized photocopies. Please remember that in order to be processed for a residency or clinical fellowship position, all of the requirements must be met BEFORE a program can release an appointment agreement to you. Failure to provide documents  may cause delay in your residency/fellowship start date. The GME Office will not accept IMG documents that are mailed directly from the applicant.

Please reference the list below of required items to bring with you on your appointed interview date.

  • Medical School Diploma – Original language and translation
  • Medical School Transcripts and Mark Sheets for EACH medical school attended – Original language and translation – Must show courses and grades.
