Combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics Residency Program


This ACGME-accredited program provides four years of training in both pediatrics and medical genetics: one year of extensive academic and clinical training in general pediatrics followed by three years of specialized education and experience in both pediatrics and medical genetics. Upon completion, trainees are eligible for board certification with both the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Residents will work in both inpatient and outpatient settings in various hospitals and clinics throughout the Texas Medical Center and the Greater Houston area including: Memorial Hermann Hospital; Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital; MD Anderson Cancer Center; UT Physicians Primary Care and specialty clinics; Shriners Hospital for Children; as well as Harris Health’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital and C.E. Odom Pediatric and Adolescent Health Center. Laboratory education takes place at state-of-the-art Baylor-Miraca Labs.


Objectives

  • Training and direct experience in obtaining a thorough medical history and physical exam with particular focus on identification of rare and ultra-rare genetic conditions
  • Hands-on experience in the application and interpretation of genetic and biochemical testing including FISH, karyotype, chromosomal microarray, exome sequencing, genome sequencing, methylation studies, panel testing, and plasma amino acids, acylcarnitine profile, and urine organic acids
  • Counseling of families regarding prognosis and recurrence risk of rare conditions and the subsequent surveillance of diagnosed individuals
  • Opportunities to serve in a supervisory role to more junior residents and medical students while on service to promote a team approach to the medical care of individuals with rare diseases
  • Development of autonomy in managing newborn screening referrals directed to our center
  • Opportunities for research in the basic and clinical sciences with a particular focus in clinical research studies on new treatments for inborn errors of metabolism through our Metabolic Clinical Trials Unit
