Do you offer file reviews for re-applicant or a re-applicant workshop?
We plan to offer a reapplicant workshop in the Spring.
Does your school have a rolling admissions policy?
McGovern Medical School does have a rolling admissions policy and will select applicants from our waitlist after the TMDSAS Match in February each year.
When are the deadlines for applying?
For deadlines and important dates, refer to TMDSAS.
Does your school have a secondary application?
McGovern Medical School does require a secondary application of all applicants. Applicants will be sent an email inviting them to complete the secondary once their application has been received.
What is your policy on deferring admission after I’ve been accepted to McGovern Medical School?
Students admitted to McGovern Medical School may request a one-year deferral. Deferrals are not automatic and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Deferral requests must be received prior to June 1st in order to be considered.
Accepted applicants requesting a deferral should complete the McGovern Medical School Request for Deferral Form and submit it as soon as possible to the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs.
What can I do to make myself a more attractive candidate for admission?
In addition to academic records, the information considered by the Admissions Committee includes the essays written by the student, MCAT scores, extra-curricular activities, work and life experiences,. Any experience in the health field including research or community work is also noted, as well as the comments contained in the letters of evaluation. We look for evidence of integrity, maturity, concern for others, leadership potential, and an aptitude for working with people.
Do you have an age limit for applicants?
No. MMS complies with Federal and State Law prohibiting discrimination against any applicant or enrolled student on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, or handicap.
What are your policies on persons with disabilities?
MMS complies with Federal and State Law prohibiting discrimination against any applicant or enrolled student on the basis of being differently abled. Applicants with disabilities will be evaluated on a case by case basis in accordance with technical standard guidelines as suggested by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Do I have to complete the required courses before applying to MMS?
No. All of our requirements must be completed prior to matriculation, not application.
Some of the required courses I took were, or will be, completed at an institution outside of the U.S. or Canada. Will these courses count toward the requirement?
Unfortunately, at least 90 undergraduate hours will need to be completed at an institution in the U.S. or Canada. We are unable to accept coursework or degrees awarded at institutions in other countries.
Do you accept transfer applicants from other medical schools?
As policy, McGovern Medical School does not accept transfer students or students with advanced academic standing.
Do you only accept applicants who majored in the sciences as an undergrad?
No preference is given to applicants who have majored in science over those who have majored in other disciplines.
A study at Harvard Medical School has shown that students are successful in their medical studies regardless of undergraduate concentration, providing that they have had adequate science preparation. Students are urged to strive not for specialized training but for a balanced and liberal education.
What undergraduate institution should I attend?
McGovern Medical School is looking for students with broad interests and talents, not for students from particular academic institutions. Attend an undergraduate college that will challenge you both academically and personally.
Is there a minimum GPA or MCAT score that I need to be above?
There is no application cutoff in terms of grade point average or MCAT scores.
Do you require the AAMC PREview Score?
The AAMC PREview score is optional for applicants. Applicants who have applied to AMCAS schools can release their scores to McGovern Medical School. Examinees may notify the AAMC after their exam by submitting the AAMC PREview Exam Scores form to [email protected] Please refer to the AAMC for the most up to date information and instructions on releasing the score.
Do you conduct interviews virtually?
Interviews are conducted virtually.
What are the interviews like? Is it one-on-one or a panel of interviewers?
Applicants invited to interview typically meet one-on-one with two different interviewers. Students applying for the MD/PhD program have additional interviews.
What is the KiraTalent video assessment?
We are including a video assessment as part of our online application process. Applicants invited to interview will complete a KiraTalent video assessment within 5 days of receiving their email invitation from [email protected].
Can I come visit McGovern Medical School for a tour?
Tours of the medical school campus are offered thorough the fall, spring and summer. To schedule a tour please visit our Interested in Taking a Tour section. Should you be invited for an interview, an extensive campus tour will be provided at that time. If accepted at MMS, you are welcome to request an individual “Preview Day” at any time.
