Announcement of Interim Leadership of the Critical Care Division

October 24, 2025

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine at UTHealth would like to announce that Dr. Rishi Kumar and Dr. Charlie Artime have been appointed as interim Co-Directors for the Critical Care Anesthesia Division, effective October 1, 2025.

Dr. Kumar completed medical school and residency at Baylor College of Medicine, and his critical care and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowships at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He has been an Assistant Professor with the department since 2019, supporting the cardiac anesthesia and critical care services.

Dr. Artime completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and residency at the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus in neuroanesthesia. He joined the department in 2009, and has been a Professor since 2021. Dr. Artime is the Clinical Executive Vice Chair for the department.

We would like to thank Drs. Kumar and Artime for their willingness to serve in this important role while the department conducts a national search for the permanent position, which will be headed by Dr. Yafen Liang.

The Division of Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesiology was built and led by our dearly departed colleague, Dr. George Williams, for the past 15 years. In that time, the Division has grown to include 10 faculty covering 7 ICUs across 3 hospitals, and is a cornerstone of the Department’s clinical, educational, and academic mission.
