Cardiovascular Anesthesiology

A Collaborative Approach to Patient-centered Care

The Cardiac Anesthesia Division provides comprehensive, patient-centered care at the Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) of Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center. Our fellow-trained, board-certified anesthesiologists are experts in the disciplines of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology and transesophageal echocardiography. We care for a variety of patients presenting for coronary artery bypass surgery, valve procedures (surgical and percutaneous), complex open and endovascular aortic repairs, heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support device implantation, thoracic surgery, structural heart procedures, electrophysiology interventions, and minor vascular surgeries. Working closely with our surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, hematologists, perfusionists, and nursing staff fosters a culture of providing exceptional patient care.

Residents and Fellows

We set high standards and expectations for our residents and fellows. Exposure to a diverse case volume and often working one-to-one with an attending physician empowers trainees to develop their procedural skills, understand cardiovascular pathophysiology and pharmacology, and better optimize cardiovascular comorbidities perioperatively. Residents receive intraoperative teaching as well as formal didactics on Friday mornings.

We currently have four ACGME certified cardiovascular anesthesia fellowship positions. Formal didactics take place on Friday morning (separate from the residents’ lecture) and focus on more complex ultrasound-related topics, complex cases, and career planning. Management of challenging and unique cases coupled with advanced training in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography prepares our fellows for the future of cardiovascular anesthesiology.

Research

As an academic institution, we also aim to advance the field of cardiovascular anesthesiology by performing cutting-edge clinical research. Our research has focused on the mechanism and prevention of perioperative organ injury, blood conservation in major aortic surgery, mechanical circulatory support, echocardiography, and enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery. Our experts regularly lecture at national and international conferences and frequently publish in major journals.
