Transplant Anesthesiology

The Solid Organ Transplant Anesthesia service provides a dedicated team of eight anesthesiologists who care for patients undergoing either liver, kidney and/or pancreas transplants at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center. The service has at least one dedicated OR each day and the anesthesia team covers after-hours call to provide continued service. With an established surgical team lead by Steve Bynon, MD and increasing collaboration with hepatology and nephrology colleagues locally and within the surrounding area, case volume is steadily increasing with anticipated numbers of 50 liver and 150 kidney transplants per year, including pediatric patients. Two to three anesthesiology residents rotate on the service each month, which includes general hepato-biliary cases as well as surgical procedures on current or future transplant recipients. Anesthesiologist presence is welcomed at the weekly (separate) kidney and liver medical review boards, standardized perioperative protocols have been developed with surgical colleagues, clinical and quality improvement research projects are underway and a regular journal club for specific areas of interest is imminent.
