MS III Elective
Material Covered:
This third-year elective is intended to introduce students to the field of anesthesiology. Students will learn the principles of airway classification and management and the basic pharmacology related to anesthesiology. They will have the opportunity to see the clinical application of multiple organ physiology and will be introduced to the techniques for conducting a preoperative evaluation of patients.
A basic anesthesiology textbook will be on loan to each student during their rotation.
By the end of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Describe the principles of airway classification and management
- Discuss the basic pharmacology related to anesthesiology
- Apply basic physiology to the clinical setting
- Perform a preoperative evaluation of patients
Students will demonstrate attainment of the above objectives through attendance and participation in didactic conferences and attendance at clinical assignments and participation in clinical activities. There will be a written examination at the end of the elective, based on material from the textbook provided.
