Research Collaborations

We collaborate with the School of Public Health at UTHealth and the School of Bioinformatics at UTHealth to use perioperative and intraoperative data, as well as a large, existing administrative database to identify risk factors and patterns of perioperative organ injury to potentially develop effective interventions for prevention and treatment of organ injury in the perioperative setting and post-hospital discharge.

We sponsor one basic/translational and clinical multi-PI collaborative research grant each year with funding of $15,000.

We are also building a platform for active collaborations between the basic research labs and clinicians within our department.

Examples include research projects to determine the role of microRNAs in the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after deep hypothermic circulatory arrest aortic surgery. This collaboration encourages clinicians to participate in basic laboratory research where they can test their clinical research ideas in a more in-depth, mechanism directed research. On the other hand, a basic research scientist could test the findings in laboratory research in the clinical setting to see their implications. This model emphasizes the importance of translational research in perioperative medicine.
