Beyond Silos

“Beyond Silos” brought together faculty, students, and administrators of UTHealth’s six schools to work together on interprofessional ethics education. To assess students’ knowledge and skills about ethics, a rubric for ethics education assessment also was developed.

The plan was directed by Thomas Cole, PhD, Professor of Oslerian Medicine, and coordinated by Nathan Carlin, PhD, Director of the McGovern Center, Karff Chair, and Professor of Medical Humanities. Current and former members of the McGovern Center were also involved in this QEP, including Angela Gomez, EdD, MBA, MS; Rebecca Lunstroth, JD, MA; and Jeffrey Spike, PhD.

Faculty involved with this program represented all six schools:

Cizik School of Nursing: Joan Engebretson, DrPH, RN, Dorothy Otto, EdD, RN, and Cathy Rozmus, PhD, RN;
McGovern Medical School: Eugene Boisaubin, MD, and Rebecca Lunstroth, JD, MA;
McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics: Kim Dunn, MD, PhD, and Jonathan Ishee, JD, MPH, MS, LLM;
MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences: William Seifert, Jr., PhD;
School of Dentistry: Richard Bebermeyer, DDS, MBA, and Catherine Flaitz, DDS, MS; and the
School of Public Health: Cynthia Chappell, PhD, and Stephen Linder, PhD;

Several members remain involved in sustaining assessments and programs of the QEP under the auspices of the Campus-Wide Ethics Program.

“Beyond Silos: Enhancing Ethics Education In and Across the Health Professions” is an unpublished university document that was submitted as the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to reaffirm the accreditation of UTHealth Houston in 2010.
