Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy is anchored in William Arthur Ward’s vision of the great teacher: one who does not merely inform or demonstrate, but inspires. Inspiration, in my view, begins with curiosity—and
I consider it my foremost responsibility to cultivate that curiosity in every trainee. In each patient encounter and every topic of discussion, I challenge students to look beyond the surface: to ask why, to
question assumptions, and to approach their discipline with the reverence it demands. Medicine practiced with genuine intellectual curiosity is medicine practiced at its highest level, and it is this
standard—rooted in humility, rigor, and deep respect for the science and the patients we serve—that I seek to instill from the very first day of training.
I believe that knowledge is most robust when it is tested in community. My approach therefore places great emphasis on collaboration and discourse—among peers, with patients and families, and across all
stakeholders in a child’s care. Fellows are encouraged to engage in open dialogue, defend their clinical reasoning, and remain genuinely receptive to perspectives that challenge their own. I teach trainees to
negotiate thoughtfully and listen as purposefully as they lead, understanding that excellent clinical service is never the product of a single mind working in isolation, but of many voices—professional and
personal—working in concert toward the well-being of the child and family before them.
Ultimately, my goal is to train fellows who are excellent not only as clinicians, but as scholars, leaders, and innovators in their chosen specialty. I am committed to engaging trainees across all spheres of
academic pursuit and to connecting each one with mentors who can model greatness and expand what they believe is possible for themselves. I invest fully and hold nothing back—because my highest
aspiration is not for my fellows to match what I have accomplished, but to surpass it. The measure of a truly great teacher is not the legacy they build for themselves, but the heights they enable in others.
That is the standard I teach toward, and the promise I make to every trainee in my care.
