It has been tremendously rewarding to have the privilege to focus my career on the education of medical students and residents since joining UTHealth in 2013.  My clinical position as an inpatient psychiatrist at the UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center has provided me with the opportunity to directly supervise hundreds of trainees across eight contiguous year of medical education.  In addition to the clinical setting, I have taught in numerous other classroom and small-group venues, both related to psychiatry and to broader medical education. My primary motivation is to help future physicians to develop into professionals equipped to provide the best care possible to their patients, and to achieve a long-lasting sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in their career path.

My objectives in all activities include:

  • Creating a challenging yet safe environment for trainees to push the limits of their abilities without fear of failure.
  • Providing highly individualized and useful constructive feedback based on a foundation of mutual trust and respect
  • Utilizing clinically-focused active learning modalities with immediate applications to patient care
  • Illustrating the relevance of psychiatry to all medical specialties
  • Promoting career satisfaction, professionalism, and professional identify formation with use of frequent reflection on personal and career challenges in medical education
