Biography

Dr. Orlander received his undergraduate degree from New York University and was awarded his medical degree from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium. He completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at St. Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven, CT. His Endocrinology fellowship training was at St. Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven, CT, and at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, and Endocrinology and Metabolism. In 1983, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas Medical School and is currently Distinguished Teaching Professor of UT System, Vice-Chairman of Internal Medicine for Education, Division Director of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and Associate Dean for Curricular affairs.

Dr. Orlander has had a strong interest in Medical Education, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. He is Chairman of the Curriculum Committee for the UT Medical School and Program Director for the Medicine Residency Program.  He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was elected to the University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education in 2006. He is the recipient of the Herbert L. and Margaret W. Dupont Master Clinical Teaching Award, the Award for Humanism in Medicine, and multiple Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Awards. In 2013, he received the UT-Houston President’s Scholar Award for Education, the UT Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Distinguished Physician Award, Memorial Hermann Hospital. In 2014, he was named Physician of the Year by the American Diabetes Association – Houston Chapter. In 2014 he became Associate Dean for Educational Programs and in 2015 he was named the Edward Randall, III Chair in Internal Medicine.
