Policy on Makeup Time and Work (Clinical Students)

Background

In order to gain the knowledge and skills needed to master the objectives and competencies of the Educational Program for the M.D. degree, students are expected to maintain consistent participation and attendance throughout their undergraduate medical education. However, McGovern recognizes that occasionally students will miss time on rotations due to illness, family emergencies, or other reasons approved by the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs (OASA).

Definitions

Absence: The student is away from the clerkship clinical site for a continuous amount of time equal to or greater than four hours, OR the student misses an educational activity related to the clerkship.

Excused Absence: An absence approved by OASA.

Unexcused Absence: A student absence without approval. An unexcused absence is grounds for failure of a clinical rotation and will be reported to OASA.

Day Off: A day free of clinical or educational activity as required by the school’s Duty Hour Policy. Students must have a minimum of one Day Off per week on clinical rotations.

Detail

Each clinical rotation allows a limited number of excused absences, in addition to the required Days Off, based on the length or type of the rotation. Additional absences will require make-up time spent on the relevant clerkship/rotation. In addition, an absence from a required educational activity may require a specific makeup assignment at the discretion of the clerkship/rotation director.

Make-Up Time

Make-up time should be arranged through the clerkship/rotation office, and should be completed as soon as possible to ensure timely grade reporting. Students may make up clinical time on a rotation during unscheduled weekends, during holiday breaks, or during vacation or Career Planning rotations in the fourth year. Completing make up time while the student is on another rotation is at the discretion of, and must be approved by, both rotation directors.

Students will have a [**] entered as their rotation grade until make-up time is completed.

Make-up time will not exceed the number of days missed.
