Biography
In my role in the Department of Pediatrics, I help educate medical students and pediatric residents at one of our outpatient clinical sites. I developed and direct both the McGovern Medical School Pediatric residency Advocacy rotation and the McGovern Medical School Pediatric residency Global Health rotation. My educational research interests include preparing learners to work with diverse patients; serving the underserved; and curriculum design and evaluation.
Educational Philosophy
My goal is to be the type of teacher who inspires with both my words and my actions, who creates an environment where questions are always welcomed, and who is never afraid to say “I’m not sure.” I want to create learning environments where the role of “teacher” and “student” are fluid definitions. I want to encourage and inspire learners to push themselves and ultimately create an atmosphere of shared knowledge through teaching, curriculum development, scholarly products and mentorship. The longer I am privileged to be in this position, the more I recognize that how I teach is as important as what I am teaching.
Mentorship has been a natural extension of my love of teaching. As a minority member of the McGovern Medical School faculty, I hope to inspire other underrepresented learners to pursue academics. Too many research studies illustrate the paucity of minority faculty members and its impact. I am privileged to be in a position that allows me access to all levels of learners. By helping them grow as physicians, I indirectly impact the quality of care for minority patients.
