Biography
My personal mission is nurturing learners to excellence in pediatric care through role modeling and relationship. I have been at UTHealth since 1991 and am now a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Community & General Pediatrics as well as the Division of Adolescent Medicine. I thrive on interacting with learners in all types of educational encounters, but most especially while we care for pediatric patients together. I am invigorated by the exchange of ideas and by the enlistment of learner and patient/parent in the therapeutic plan. I am a lifelong learner and especially passionate to model for my learners “I don’t know either, let’s look it up!”
I am the Associate Program director for the Pediatric Residency and supervise the Continuity Clinic experience. I teach MSIII about Communication and Adolescent patient care each block. In 2015, I was chosen to co-direct The Healer’s Art elective and am excited to now be involved with our first year medical students as they discover what they have brought to their medical education and will continue to use throughout their medical careers.
Educational Philosophy
My personal mission at the University is nurturing learners to excellence in Pediatric care through role modeling and relationship. During patient care with residents, I enjoy guiding them to clinical excellence as well as acquiring the skills they will need following graduation. During meetings with my mentees, I focus on their current abilities and areas they are hoping to improve. In didactic teaching, I strive to provide clear explanations so that learners can apply the information to patient care. One of my personal interests is the role communication plays in medical care. I utilize both my workshops for interns and the block lecture time with MSIII to provide specific communication skills. I also utilize my time in clinic with learners to role model successful communication. I am also very attentive to my own communication with patients/parents as well as my learners’ communication with them so that I am able to give clear examples of ways to improve. My personal teaching passions also include Adolescent medicine especially talking to teens and their parents; feedback and evaluation as communication to improve the learner and myself; dealing with difficult learners and coaching physicians in their communication and/or teaching. I am also passionate to co-direct for The Healer’s Art, a first year medical student elective housed within the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics.
