Policy on Mid-Rotation Feedback
Objective: McGovern Medical School requires that all students are assessed and receive formative feedback by at least the mid-point of all required clerkships and selectives of four weeks or greater duration, to allow sufficient time for remediation. The purpose of mid-rotation feedback is to support the medical students’ skill development and ensure a learning environment for continuous improvement.
Feedback Format: Feedback should be an in-person or virtual meeting involving both the student and the faculty. Students should come prepared to verbally discuss their self-evaluation of their performance.
Faculty may delegate the task of providing feedback to a resident/fellow physician (PGY-3 or higher) who has been working closely with the student during the rotation and has personal knowledge of the student’s performance. Delegation is not appropriate when significant concerns exist for student underperformance or professionalism issues.
Content: Feedback should include both students’ strengths and areas that require improvement. Concrete and specific examples of what has been observed should be included to make the feedback more meaningful. Feedback should include all competency areas. During the mid-point feedback session, the student and attending/resident/fellow should set goals for the remainder of the rotation.
Documentation: A record of the mid-point feedback session should be documented by the attending or resident/fellow physician to track students’ progress and for future reference. Faculty will have access to the completed mid-rotation feedback form prior to completing the final evaluation.
