Policy on Preparation of Residents for Teaching

Requirement:

  • All incoming residents are required to participate in a GME orientation workshop on the topic of teaching and creating a positive learning environment. This educational activity prepares them for teaching and assessing medical students. 

Additional Support Available:

  • A longitudinal program, the Physician Educator Certificate Program, is offered to residents and fellows who desire additional training in pedagogy to build effective teaching skills.
  • Workshops such as “Effective Teaching,” “Providing Feedback,” and “Assessment of Learners” are offered through the Office of Educational Programs. Workshops can be requested at any time.

9.1 Preparation of Resident and Non-Faculty Instructors

In a medical school, residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors in the medical education program who supervise or teach medical students are familiar with the learning objectives of the course or clerkship and are prepared for their roles in teaching and assessment. The medical school provides resources to enhance residents’ and non-faculty instructors’ teaching and assessment skills and provides central monitoring of their participation in those opportunities.
