Preceptorship

Clinical faculty volunteer to have 1-2 students visit their clinic for 6 half-day sessions during the semester. During this program the pre-clerkship student will practice the history and physical skills they learned during their first semester. The students will have at least 1 patient experience and complete 1 write up per visit. Faculty preceptors will have a short mid-point and final evaluation to complete for the students.

MS1 Spring

• 6 half day sessions (January – May)

• Scheduling of students can vary

– Students can be scheduled together, with visits approximately every other week

– Students can be scheduled one at a time, with one student scheduled per week

MS2 Fall

• 6 half day sessions (August—December)

• Scheduling of students can vary

– Students can be scheduled together, with visits approximately every other week

– Students can be scheduled one at a time, with one student scheduled per week

What would be the requirements of a Doctoring Course Physician Faculty?

The minimum requirement would be to host a pair of students (2) in your clinic approximately every two weeks for a total of 6 sessions during the semester. Each student should have a minimum of 1 patient contact each session.  The same students would be assigned to you the entire semester, which will allow them to be acquainted with your patients and office procedures over time. We would like every faculty to consider hosting 4 students total, which would mean 2 students one week alternating with 2 different students the following week (Ex: Student A & B on weeks 1 and 3, Student C & D on weeks 2 and 4).

How much time would be required for this role?

The program is fairly flexible, and does not require much time per half day, since much of the instruction is via observation during your clinical management, or brief discussions during your routine of patient care.

What is the experience level of the students?

These are pre-clerkship medical students who have had instruction and simulated patient practice in the full history and full normal physical exam but have not yet incorporated laboratory or imaging studies in their diagnosis. They are eager and learn quickly and will acquire knowledge about pathophysiology and diseases throughout the semester.

What should I do if my patients aren’t comfortable with students?

In most clinical settings, patients are willing to have students involved in their care, but some patients may not be. The priority must always be to create the best care for patients. Our students know that they will not be able to be involved in all of the patients. That is why we have a minimum of 1 patient experience per half day, allowing for flexibility at your direction.

How can I take on a medical student if I am a specialist?

Our students will get a rich experience whether it is in a primary care or specialist setting. For instance, a student may be directed: “Mrs. Smith, would you mind if my medical student takes a few minutes to ask about diabetes?” in an Ophthalmology clinic

What if I have vacation or will be out some weeks during the semester?

You can work out the schedule with the students, and schedule make-up times, or reschedule based on what works best for your schedule.

What are the bottom line obligations?

Schedule – Mentor 2 students for one half day every other week for a total of 6 sessions

Consider – Mentoring 2 additional students in the alternate weeks

Pt exposure – Minimum of 1 patient experiences each half day, with more as appropriate

Write-up – Students do at least 1 pt focused write up (SOAP) each half day (may be printed out or emailed as per your preference)

Feedback – Give students brief feedback on their write-up, and give feedback at least once a month, with more as possible

Formal Evaluations – Online evaluation forms at the mid-course and end of the course (takes 7-10 min)

Directors – Dr. Eugene Toy & Dr. Katherine Terracina
