Teaching Opportunities

MS1 – First Semester

  • Didactic Teaching: Within the Foundations of Medical Science course and/or Doctoring 1 course
  • Professionalism Small Groups:
    • Class divided into small groups across two days (same professionalism cases)
    • Faculty may facilitate one or both days
  • Team-Based Learning (TBL): Fridays

MS1 – Second Semester

  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL):
    • 8-week blocks, two sessions per week (2 hours each)
    • Monday & Wednesday, 10–12 a.m. or 2–4 p.m.
    • Detailed teaching guide provided
  • Preceptor Sessions:
    • 6 half-day sessions during the semester
    • Students come to your clinical site and see a patient of your choosing
  • Didactic Teaching: Within the system modules and/or Doctoring 2 course

MS2 – First Semester

  • PBL:
    • 8-week blocks, two sessions per week (2 hours each)
    • Monday & Wednesday, 10–12 a.m. or 2–4 p.m.
  • Preceptor Sessions: 6 half-day sessions during the semester
  • Didactic Teaching: Within the system modules and/or Doctoring 3 course
  • Ethics Small Groups:
    • 5 sessions over the fall semester
    • Fridays, 2 hours per session (afternoon)
    • Faculty agree to complete all 5 sessions

MS2 – Second Semester

  • Didactic Teaching: Within the system modules and/or Doctoring 3 course

MS3 Year

  • Clinical and/or Didactic Teaching: Within the clerkships
  • Electives: Teach in existing MS3 electives or create a new one

MS4 Year

  • Clinical Teaching: Within required and elective rotations
  • Didactic Teaching: Within the Career Focus Tracks (Academic Career, Acute Care, Applied Anatomy, Primary Care)
  • Workshops & Activities:
    • Transition to Residency Course: March
    • Night on Call Simulation: February/March
      • Faculty sign up for AM or PM session (3 hours)
      • 1-hour training in advance; no additional preparation required
    • Community Action Poverty Simulator:
      • Dates throughout the year (½ day)
      • Typically held at the Cooley Center; no advance work required
    • Mass Casualty Incident:
      • March/April
      • Faculty facilitate interprofessional student groups

Medical Student Research Office

  • Introduction to Research I (Extracurricular Elective):
    • 1–2 late afternoon facilitation sessions
    • Topics: reading literature, creating research questions, writing hypotheses, selecting research designs
  • Introduction to Research II (Extracurricular Elective):
    • Late afternoon workshop on research proposal writing
    • Session on basic statistical methods for research
  • Teaching Competition Coaches:
    • Academy of Master Educator membership required
    • Faculty meet for one month to prepare students to deliver a 5-minute lecture
