In my role as professor of physiology, and for more than 30 years as the coordinator of the Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support programs, my efforts have focused on advancing the field of biomedical sciences, dental and medical education, and preparing students to handle medical emergencies. My past research has focused on resuscitation from cardiac arrest. We have explored the effects of prolonged cardiac arrest, defibrillation thresholds, and the effects of various drugs in an effort to gain a better understanding of the factors affecting survival in cardiac arrest victims. Although I am still interested in that area, my efforts are now focused on teaching and service. My teaching primarily falls into four areas: Physiology, Medical Emergency Procedures, Cased Based Integration of Basic Science Material and Ethics; taught to dental students, medical students, graduate students and residents. Most recently, I helped design and implement a new biomedical sciences curriculum for the School of Dentistry and serve as course director for two of the major first year courses. I have also helped develop PBL courses within the School of Dentistry and facilitated PBL for medical and dental students for many years. I served as the Vice President for Faculties for the American Dental Education Association and as a trustee for the ADEA – Gies Foundation. I currently serve as the Councilor for the ADEA Section of Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the Chair of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Special Interest Group for ADEA. I have presented national symposia and workshops on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and helped conduct national surveys on physiology and pharmacology education in dental schools. I have also served as a Category Coordinator for the Houston Science Engineering Fair for the past 30 plus years.
