Time off for Residency Interviews
Time off for residency interviews is granted at the discretion of the course director. Each clinical rotation allows a limited number of excused absences, in addition to the required Days Off, based on the length or type of the rotation. Additional absences will require make-up time spent on the relevant clerkship/rotation. In addition, an absence from a required educational activity may require a specific makeup assignment at the discretion of the clerkship/rotation director.
Please refer to the Policy on Makeup Time and Work (Clinical Students) for full policy.
- a maximum of five days from an elective
- a maximum of three days from a mini-elective
- a maximum of two days from a required course
Note that both residency interview days and sick days are included in these excused absences. Residency interview absences must be cleared through the OASA Absence Portal. Students wishing to be excused one or more days must obtain approval from the course director prior to the first class day and should be prepared to make up time and work missed.
Make-Up Time
Make-up time should be arranged through the clerkship/rotation office, and should be completed as soon as possible to ensure timely grade reporting. Students may make up clinical time on a rotation during unscheduled weekends, during holiday breaks, or during vacation or Career Planning rotations in the fourth year. Completing make up time while the student is on another rotation is at the discretion of, and must be approved by, both rotation directors.
Students will have a [**] entered as their rotation grade until make-up time is completed.
Make-up time will not exceed the number of days missed.
Peak interviewing months are November through January. Interviewing may take place earlier, especially for the early specialty matches, and can continue until early February. Your rank order list of residency programs for the National Resident Matching Program must be submitted by mid-February.
