New perioperative institute launches to make surgery safer

April 22, 2025

UTHealth Houston has established the Institute of Perioperative Medicine, a major research initiative aimed at improving surgical outcomes and reducing complications. The institute, involving McGovern Medical School and the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, will focus on preventing perioperative organ injuries—one of the top causes of death following surgery.

Each year, over 200 million major surgeries occur globally, with a 4% 30-day mortality rate and up to 15% of patients experiencing serious complications. The new institute will use tools like artificial intelligence, clinical trials, and translational research to address these challenges.

IPM Co-Directors

Led by co-directors Dr. Holger Eltzschig and Dr. Cynthia Ju, the institute brings together experts across fields including anesthesiology, surgery, emergency medicine, and data science. It will be organized into five specialized research centers and aims to double its research funding within five years.

UTHealth Houston envisions the institute as a national leader in surgical safety, dedicated to innovation, education, and improving patient care.
