Research reveals “Big Picture” of Perioperative Organ Injury

May 15, 2025

A groundbreaking study published in Nature Communications, co-authored by Dr. Yafen Liang, Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research, and Dr. Holger Eltzschig, Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at McGovern Medical School, has unveiled the profound impact of perioperative organ injuries on surgical patient outcomes. Analyzing data from over 28 million surgical cases in Germany between 2014 and 2017, the research identified that 4.4% of patients experienced organ injuries during or after surgery. These injuries were linked to a ninefold increase in in-hospital mortality and extended hospital stays by an average of 11.2 days. The study underscores the necessity for heightened vigilance and targeted interventions in perioperative care.

Notably, acute kidney injury emerged as the most prevalent complication, occurring in 2.0% of cases with a 25.0% mortality rate. Other significant findings included high mortality rates associated with liver injury (68.7%) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (44.7%), despite their lower incidence rates. This extensive research highlights the critical need for improved strategies to prevent and manage organ injuries in surgical patients, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and reduce healthcare burdens.
