The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine at UTHealth is pleased to announce that Dr. Xiaoyi Yuan has been appointed as Director of the Resident Scholars Program. Dr. Xiaoyi Yuan will work closely with the Vice Chair for Education, the Residency Program Director, and the Residency Office to lead the Scholars program. This program was started in 2022 and created to help train and mentor future physician-scientists as they balance clinical and scholarly effort throughout their residency. Resident Scholars follow a traditional four-year residency with eleven months of protected research time built across the program. Our current resident scholars are Oleg Makarevich, Yan Levitsky, Orkun Kopac, Alexandra Moauro, and Illyan Vlasakov. We would like to thank the residency leadership for their efforts with the search and everyone who applied for these positions.
Dr. Xiaoyi Yuan, Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston, brings a distinguished background in immunology and pulmonary research to the role of Director of Resident Scholars Program. Dr. Yuan earned a B.S. in Biology from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. in Immunology from Baylor College of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral training in Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Yuan’s research focuses on the immune mechanisms underlying acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and lung inflammation, with a particular emphasis on myeloid cell biology and microRNA regulation. As a Parker B. Francis Fellow and recipient of multiple national research awards, Dr. Yuan has contributed significant insights into hypoxia signaling, innate immunity, and therapeutic strategies for lung injury. Dr. Yuan’s expertise and commitment to advancing translational research will be an asset to the residency program and its trainees.
